A new addition to Detroit Avenue is helping customers fill their homes with fragrance without the worry of harmful ingredients. Located at 15610 Detroit Ave, Thrive & Shine Candles recently opened its storefront in Lakewood, offering handcrafted candles, wax melts, and linen sprays made with transparency, sustainability, and wellness in mind.
Owner Alison Griffiths first began making candles five years ago as a hobby. What started as a personal project soon became a mission to create cleaner, safer alternatives to traditional candles. Inspired by family members who are cancer survivors and her own experience with headaches caused by conventional candles, Griffiths set out to create products that were both enjoyable and free from ingredients linked to potential health concerns.
Today, Thrive & Shine Candles produces candles that are free from all known carcinogens and endocrine disruptors. Every ingredient used in the company’s products is listed directly on the packaging, giving customers complete transparency about what they are bringing into their homes. The candles are made with soy wax and feature wood wicks for a clean, even burn.
After refining her products, Griffiths began selling at makers markets about a year and a half ago. Customers quickly embraced the products, with many events resulting in complete sellouts. The enthusiastic response encouraged her to continue growing the business.
In February of this year, Griffiths took over a space at the Screw Factory, where all Thrive & Shine products are now produced. A little over a month ago, she opened her first retail storefront next to Beat Cycles on Detroit Avenue, giving customers a dedicated space to explore the brand’s growing collection of scents.
Many of the fragrances are inspired by Griffiths’ memories and nostalgia. Popular scents include Honeydew Melon and Coffee House, while one of the store’s most unique offerings is Fresh Cut Grass. The scent was inspired by a fragrance Griffiths loves despite being allergic to grass herself.
As Thrive & Shine continues to grow, several new offerings are already in development. The business plans to introduce a line of spa-inspired fragrances, larger 12-ounce candles, and car diffusers designed to bring favorite scents beyond the home.
The storefront will soon become a destination for hands-on creativity as well. Griffiths plans to offer candle-making classes for both beginners and intermediate makers, along with private group classes for parties of five or more.
Sustainability is also a priority for the business. Thrive & Shine is currently developing a refill program that will allow customers to reuse their candle jars rather than discard them. Visitors can also browse the store’s Consignment Corner, which features artwork created by local artists.
Whether customers are searching for a nostalgic fragrance, a thoughtful gift, or a cleaner-burning candle option, Thrive & Shine Candles aims to create products that help people enjoy comforting scents without compromising on ingredient transparency or quality.
