The Wandering Lantern Brings a Love of Reading to Madison Avenue

February 26, 2026

A new chapter has begun at 15729 Madison Ave. with the arrival of The Wandering Lantern, a charming children’s bookshop. Co-owned by Emily Mitchell, a third and fourth grade reading and writing teacher, and Michael Plant, a serial entrepreneur, the shop is a heartfelt addition to the neighborhood.

For Emily, a mother, teacher, and lifelong reader, The Wandering Lantern is a dream brought to life. After years of nurturing a love of books in her classroom and at home, she and Michael opened the shop last year with a vision of creating a welcoming space where stories could spark imagination and connection.

Step inside and you will find a warm, inviting atmosphere with a vintage and classic feel. Thoughtfully arranged shelves highlight an array of titles, with a special emphasis on literary and children’s classics. Books are organized by age and reading level, making it easy for families to find just the right fit. Sections include books for readers ages 0 – 3, 5 – 8, middle grade readers, classics, young adult novels, and a small but curated selection for adults. The shop offers a healthy mix of picture books, chapter books, and graphic novels to engage readers at every stage.

Beyond books, The Wandering Lantern encourages creativity and play without screens. The shop accepts book donations and also carries toys, puzzles, crafts, and educational supplies designed to spark hands-on learning and entertainment. Shoppers will also find a small selection of merch, tote bags, greeting cards, stickers, and earrings.

Visitors are invited to linger. Complimentary coffee or tea is available, and cozy nooks throughout the shop offer the perfect spot to settle in with a good book. A separate side room hosts events, party rentals, and the shop’s weekly Saturday story time. Story time takes place every Saturday from 11 to 11:30 AM for children ages 0 – 5, and from 11:30 AM to 12 PM for children ages 5 – 12.

The Wandering Lantern has already begun building community through events such as a monthly family book club, a recent Valentine making event, and a festive hot cocoa pajama party. With more programming planned throughout the year, there is always something new on the calendar.

Conveniently located right across the street from Wager Park and equipped with an ADA accessible bathroom, the shop is designed with families in mind. Emily and Michael are thrilled to put down roots in the community and look forward to partnering with other local businesses whenever possible.
